This past Sunday, son RJ, wife Leslie and I completed the third Run Around the Rice, a fun community event that provides tremendous and needed support for Biggs Elementary School.

This 5k race is a snapshot of many of the things I love in Sacramento Valley rice country – families coming together for a great cause. Laughter, smiles and unity are pervasive. The turnout was fantastic this year, with several hundred runners on hand. We were treated to wildlife in the fields, airplanes dropping rice seeds and views of the gorgeous Butte County countryside!

This is the third straight year that RJ and I have done this run, and I have noticed how much he has grown during this time.

He showed a lot of grit, too, running it in about 31 minutes – beating me by nine seconds and taking two minutes off of last year’s race.

I love to run and enjoy visiting rice farms, so combining these two parts of my life was an opportunity I wouldn’t miss!
