Wildlife Woodcarving showcases Our beautiful Rice Environment
By Luke Matthews
Every year, we at the Rice Commission sponsor carvings of riceland species at the Pacific Flyway Decoy Association’s Wildlife Art Show in Sacramento. I was part of the judging team this year, and we needed much deliberation to determine the best renditions.
Taking first place in the Belted Kingfisher category is this stunning work by artist Gary De Cew of Anaheim.
Gary also won top honors for this artwork of an iconic rice field shorebird, the Black-necked Stilt.
Acclaimed artist Bob Berry of El Cajon took top honors again this year for this salmon woodcarving.
The Pacific Flyway Decoy Association hosts a wide range of other carvings in addition to the Commission’s sponsored categories. These range from fish, shorebirds, floating decoys, miniature decoys, to songbirds. Furthermore, there are carvings for sale, paintings, photography, and live raptors. This event show cases stunning art that would be appreciated by hunters, birders, and wildlife enthusiasts alike. If you have never taken advantage of this amazing event, I highly recommend that you check it out next year. The PFDA will have their 50th annual show next July 18 and 19 at the Double Tree Hotel in Sacramento.
